Trust, Don’t Be Afraid

Matthew 14:22-29

Jesus Walks on the Water
Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.  After he had dismissed them, he went up on a mountainside by himself to pray. Later that night, he was there alone,  and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it.

Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear.

But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

“Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.”

“Come,” he said.

Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus.

This is a perfect story of Trust, when times are uncertain, we look to the world to fix them, anxiety sets in and then you begin to fear. What will happen, how will this be fixed?  look at this scripture, in the boat, the waves are kicking up with wind speeds fastly approaching they arent close by land? What now? Fear sets the stage, Jesus comes to them but amazingly walking on the water! Of course they can’t recognize Him so they think it’s  a ghost! Can you imagine what they thought, possibly fear washed over them pretty quickly. But of course Jesus said “take courage, it’s me! Don’t be afraid.”

So Peter, being the leader of group, he’s confirming that’s it’s not a ghost that’s it Jesus and says “if it’s you, tell me to come to you on the water.” What does Jesus say? COME!

What does Jesus tell us to do when we are afraid? COME! Look to me not the waves, wind or shaking of your life situation, “look at Me”.

Peter loves the Lord but even more trusts Him and steps out on the water because Jesus invited him. Isn’t this what happens to us everyday? Jesus invites Himself to us, how amazing is that. Sadly some don’t believe and miss the opportunity to allow Him to carry us through and over the water.

Matthew 14:30-33

But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?”And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down.  Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.”

But look, as soon as Peter saw the wind, became afraid and began to sink. That’s what happens when we take our eyes off Jesus, we sink, we focus on the problem instead of depending on Him for help and just knowing He has the highest and best plan and outcome for our situation.

Jesus looks at peter, He reaches out to Him (as He does to us) and says I have you! But you didn’t have faith that I could do the things I tell you I can do, you doubted me.

But there was a reason for all of this, Even when we feel the storm is so bad with no way out we know who Jesus is, the Son of God. he died for us, taking on the sins of us all, shedding His blood as a sacrifice so that we may live free and all who believe in Him will be with Him in eternity.
