Money & Possessions

Deuteronomy 8:18  But remember the Lord your God, for it is he who gives you the ability to produce wealth, and so confirms his covenant, which he swore to your ancestors, as it is today.

It’s amazing how sometimes we think because we work hard and try to accomplish great things, it’s because of our own efforts, our own strength but it is God that gives us the blessing of work, the ability to do this  and the money that we have. If you really think about it, what if you weren’t able to accomplish great things, would all the possessions count so much? What if you really didn’t have to have them, could you see your life resisting more, maybe even instead looking to your Father in heaven for not material blessings but spiritual ones. Matthew 6:24 “No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.

Money and possessions are short-term satisfaction, once achieved always looking for more of this and that. But truly if you spent time praying instead of looking at the things that can be bought and focus on your heavenly Father you will have blessings that aren’t temporary but eternal. Your final destination is what you truly should be looking at, and  your treasures here won’t help you to have a relationship with Jesus because you are focusing on the stuff that fades away and not the living water that is free and will last.

Luke 9:3 He told them: “Take nothing for the journey—no staff, no bag, no bread, no money, no extra shirt.

Jesus tells His disciples not to depend on “the stuff” but completely depend on Him. How hard is this for you, to say no to the things that you continue to run after but not a rich relationship and dependency on God your ultimate provider.

Acts 5:3 Then Peter said, “Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit and have kept for yourself some of the money you received for the land?

Oh and there’s trying to hold back from God, “I have made a lot of money in this deal, let me keep it, even though I promised some of it to charity”. There is nothing that you can do that God does not see. You can’t hide anything from His sight. So be very careful when you make promises to God and not follow through. Do you really need that new dress or shoes? Do you really need that state of the art TV or could you be feeding a child that’s been hungry for a week or a homeless shelter that needs food and clothes?

1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.

What does all of this get you? More money, more stuff, more problems because the focus was on the things that entice you in this world instead of seeking what God would truly bless you with and give you peace, yes you can go hiking, on vacation and do the fun things that God has provided you, but you must also remember Jesus said store your treasure in heaven.

Matthew 6:19 Treasures in Heaven
“Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.

The world as we know it right now is out of control, people have no limits in the way they speak to others, how they solve emotional problems and where they put their hope. A lot of people put hope in their money, now I understand that we must have this in order to live we have to get income for our needs and things we desire.

But what you do if you lost everything today? Have you ever thought about it? People live through tremendous storms in life and they lose everything through weather, divorce, loss of job. But… what’s the difference if it was your last day on earth and you leave everything behind, but for what? What’s ahead for you after here?

Many people would say, I’m a good person and I will get into Heaven and see Jesus, this is what Jesus says:

Matthew 7:13 “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.

How does that affect you? You may or may not attend church, you say you believe in God but sit in judgement of others, you don’t forgive someone when they wrong you, you talk badly about others and you help yourself to things that aren’t yours. The list can go on but truly when you have a relationship with Jesus these things aren’t part of your life anymore, in fact the thought of it makes you sick, like a sin-ful of disease. Jesus then tells us:

Matthew 7:14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.

My friends  what you live for now, is temporary, here today, gone tomorrow and what is left? If you don’t build a relationship with Jesus, what will you have after this life? I can tell you just what Jesus says right here:

John 3:3   “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.”

God’s Hope: Stop trying to fit God into your life somewhere, maybe on Sunday’s or whenever you get around to thinking about it-He’s your Heavenly Father, who loves you and desires a relationship with you right now, nothing or no one on earth can save you after you are gone only Jesus who is always knocking at the door of your heart for a relationship with Him- shedding His Blood for the redemption of your sins.                          Who would do this for you?
